Quarter Midget racing is a fun family orientated speedway class for boys and girls AGED from 8 years to 16 years old.

Quarter Midget racing is an action-packed, family-oriented speedway class tailored specifically for young drivers aged 8 to 16 years old. Competing on oval dirt tracks throughout both the North and South Islands, Quarter Midgets are scaled-down versions of full-size Midget race cars. They utilise much of the same unique open-wheel componentry, giving young racers authentic, hands-on mechanical and driving experience.

Don't let their age fool you—these young competitors showcase incredible skill and car control. Delivering the same intense, wheel-to-wheel action as the adult ranks, these cars lap dirt tracks just over 4 seconds slower than the premier F1 Midget class. It is a highly competitive, thrilling spectacle that consistently puts on a fantastic show for speedway fans.

Our race season runs annually from October through to the King's Birthday weekend, with club members regularly competing at prominent venues including Lucas Oil Waikaraka Speedway, Rosebank Speedway, and other major dirt tracks across New Zealand.

Quarter Midget racing in New Zealand proudly traces its origins right here to Auckland.

• 1983 – Foundation: The foundational roots of our class began with the establishment of the Auckland Quarter Midget Club, formed in 1983 by Ken Mullins. 

• The First Tracks: The very first Speedway New Zealand (SNZ) sanctioned track to host Quarter Midget racing was the iconic Western Springs Speedway. This historic central Auckland venue has fostered open-wheel talent since Midget cars first arrived in New Zealand back in December 1937.

• 2006 – The Birth of Kiwikidz: As the class grew in popularity, the original club evolved to form the Kiwikidz Quarter Midget Club in 2006.

• Evolution & Expansion: The club rebranded itself to reflect a truly expansive, collaborative footprint across the region. This ensured young drivers could formally register to race at premier North Island venues like Lucas Oil Speedway, Huntly Speedway and Kihikihi Speedway. 

 

Today, Quarter Midget racing has successfully expanded nationwide. Budding drivers can now register and compete across a wide network of major clubs and speedways spanning Auckland, Christchurch, Kihikihi, and Nelson. Kiwikidz remains dedicated to providing a safe, inspiring pathway that mentors the next generation of Kiwi motorsport champions.
