With Hayden Guptill and Ryan Barry making history by being the first drivers in any class to run all three Auckland tracks in one weekend, it was off to Waikaraka for the start of a busy fortnight.
Race one saw Hayden take the win with Breyton Davison, Ben LeCren, Ryan and Mitch Watts follow him home. Race two saw the track start to fall apart but this had no effect on Hayden who took another win to be followed home by Ryan, Mitch and Ben. Breyton failed to take the start due to mechanical problems.
It was then time for a large amount of water to be put on the track to try and bring the surface back. Race three saw less dust but the holes were still there. Breyton took victory in this one followed by Ryan, Hayden, Ben and Mitch. This meant Hayden was the top points scorer and unfortunatley for him drew the fastest off the back marble.
Race four saw water put on the track just before the boys went out. This made the track very tricky and a bit of a lotery for the early laps. Ben had and engine failure and this rapid stop saw Ryan unable to avoid him and he was left stranded on the edge of the track for a lap until the yellows were put on. Off the restart Hayden passed Mitch for second and started to chase Breyton down. He was unable to catch him and that saw Breyton take the win followed by Hayen, Mitch and Ryan with Ben not finishing.
It was now off the Springs for the final night. WIth dirty cars arriving at the Springs it was gear changes and washing for most cars with Paul LeCren having a bit more work having to change a motor.
Ryan took the first race win followed by Nathan Howard, Hayden, Morgan McHugh, Breyton, Mitch and Ben. Melissa Baker and Zane O'Gara failed to finish. Race two saw Hayden take a big lead until Morgan decided to get his first taste of upside down and brought the fieild back together. On the restart Hayden and Ryan took off for what looked to be an good battle. Hayden then had mechanical problems that saw him go to the infield soon to be joined again by Zane O'Gara. Ryan then took the win followed by Mitch, Breyton, Nathan, Ben and Melissa.
Sunday saw Rosebank complete the trifeta for Hayden and Ryan with thier third track in two days. Race one saw Ryan take the win followed by Hayden Nathan and Morgan. Race two saw Nathan win followed by Ryan, Morgan and Hayden.
Race three saw Nathan again take the win followed by Hayden and Morgan. Ryans day was ended during this race and he finished it on the infield.
The feature saw Hayden and Morgan start off the front row with Nathan behind them. Hayden took and early lead and Nathan soon passed Morgan and was chasing Hayden down. Nathan rubbed his way past Hayden who then tried to get the lead back around the outside and spun. Off the yellow Nathan took off from the front follwed by Morgan. Hayden then made a pass on Morgan to come home second followed by Morgan with Nathan taking out the win.
It was then a week to get the cars ready for another busy weekend. Hayden and Ryan headed off to Waihi Beach to be joined by Nicholas Wells and Hayden Greenhalgh in the training car. Race one saw Ryan and Hayden Guptill take off with Nicholas and Hayden Greenhalgh getting to grips with the track. Hayden Guptill then snapped a chain and soon afterwards was joined on the infield by Ryan. Hayden Greenhalgh saw his first ever race result in a win followed home by Nicholas.
Hayden Greenhalgh then had to head off for a wedding. Race two saw Ryan take the win from Hayden and Nicholas. Race three again saw Hayden take an early lead only to again be past by Ryan and they were followed home by Nicholas. Race four saw Hayden Greenhalgh arrive back for another run in the training car before the reception. He had loved the first run in the car so much that before this race Dad made a phone call to Christchurch and brought the Chevene Hassan 69 car which will be ready to go at club champs next weekend at Waharoa. This race was Ryan having the win with Hayden Guptill spinning out in a wet patch and Hayden Greenhalgh and Nicholas followed him home.
We asked the great people at Waihi Beach if we could have an extra race and out we went again. Hayden Guptill took and early lead and Ryan tried every trick that he has learnt in his five years of driving but Haydens lines were just right and he was unable to get by. Ryan was bouncing in and out of the holes sometimes gaining huge air in an effort that even though Hayden won the race won Ryan driver of the day for the whole meeting across all classes. Hayden Guptill took out the win followed by Ryan (who must have been regretting giving Hayden advise on what lines to run) then Hayden Greenhalgh and Nicholas.
Nicholas and Hoot then had to head off to Baypark to run the Ministock and Hadyen Greenhalgh headed back to the wedding proceeding so Hayden and Ryan stayed for prizegiving that saw Ryan take the overall win for the day followed by the ever improving Nicholas and then Hayden Guptill.
Sunday saw the quarters take on their fifth track in a fortnight. It was a long awaited return to Kihikihi with a difference, we were running the new solo track.
Race one saw Ryan take the win followed by Hayden, Breyton, Nathan, Ben and Morgan. In all my time in quarters i have never seen the kids come off the track buzzing like they were after the first race. The track is exceptionally challening and produced a great race one that was followed up by a few more during the day. Race two saw Ryan take the win again followed by Ben who made a great pass on Hayden on the last corner, they were followed home by Morgan and Nathan with Breyton spinning and not finishing.
Race three saw Hayden make a pass on Ryan after the restart from a Morgan spin and hold on to stop Ryans clean sweep. They were followed by Breyton, Ben, Nathan and Morgan. Race four saw Ryan take the win again followed by Ben, Breyton, Morgan and Nathan with Hayden spinning on the last lap chasing Breyton down. Race five saw Hayden and Ryan coming from the back row. This didn't stop Ryan who again came through for the win. Morgan again spun closing the field up with Ryan winning easily and Breyton stay ahead of a fast finishing Hayden, Ben, Nathan and then Morgan.
This saw Ryan easily take the points over the day followed by Hayden, Ben and Breyton who who only one point apart from each other. This track gave the crowd a great oppourtunty to see the skills of these junior race car drivers. With sideways being the order of the day and many great passes over the day it was a welcome return to Kihikihi speedway. We hope this will become an annual fixture.
With club champs at Waharoa next weekend then Rosebank on Sunday it is back to one meeting a weekend for the next two weeks before a tripple header at Kaikohe over Easter.
