With the chance of three race meetings in three days in was with excitment that half a dozen cars headed off to Rotorua on Friday to start the weekend off. After setting up at the beautiful location of the Blue Lakes Holiday Camp it was off to Paradise Valley Speedway for the first nights racing. WIth dark clouds overhead a close watch was kept on the approaching weather.
Race one saw Ben LeCren, Ryan Barry and Hayden Guptill head into turn one three wide to start the night off with some excitment. Ryan Barry came out of this encounter in front to take an ealry lead. He was overtaken by Hayden who never gave up the lead. Hayden and Ryan were followed home by Nathan Howard, Breyton Davison and Ben LeCren. Andrew Hanson had to watch the completion of the race from the infield after dropping a chain.
Just as the kids were in their cars on the dummy grid along came the dreaded rain. Although an attempt was made to save the track the rain kept coming and the racing was called off until 2pm on Saturday.
After a trip to the Luge with the kids racing hard down there it was off to the track for a long day of racing. WIth race two finally getting underway Hayden took an early lead followed by Ryan who soon made a pass for the lead, Hayden took the lead back on the next corner. Hayden was followed home by Andrew, Nathan, Breyton and Ben. It was Ryans turn to watch the racing from the infield with mechanical problems.
Race three was a case of survival on a slick track that caught out a few people. Hayden and Breyton got into an ealry battle for the lead and with a minor touch between the two car the boys opened up the door for Ryan to take a lead he never gave up. Nathan and Ben got together with their cars hooking up and need to be seperated by the safety crew. Not long after the green came back on Hayden spun and was caught out by a yellow flag on the start but no yellow lights. Andrew then join the club and ended up facing the wrong way. Ryan took the win followed by Breyton then Andrew and Nathan crossed the line in a dead heat. Ben and Hayden follwed them home. This was the conclusion of day ones racign programme. Hayden took out the points for this section of the programme with Nathan coming in second with Breyton and Ryan equal for third.
The track was then completely relaid for the trophy section of the day. Race one saw Hayden and Andrew make good use of thier front row starts taking first and second followed home by Ryan, Breyton, Nathan and Ben.
Race two saw Breyton use his front row start to his advantage and take off for an early lead. Hayden worked his way to behind Breyton and misjudged a pass which saw him ride a wheel and have a spectacular roll over. Breyton kept the lead off the restart and with Ryan trying all of his tricks to get by was unable to get past and had to settle for second. They were followed home by Ben, Andrew and Nathan. Hayden took his turn watching the completion of the race from the infield.
Race three saw Ryan make best use of his front row start with the repaired car of Hayden finish in second behind him. They were followed home by Andrew, Nathan, Breyton and Ben. My appologies for the brief description of this race after fixing Haydens car I forgot to take any notes.
This saw Ryan take home the Quarters in Paradise for the second year in a row. Andrew took out second with Hayden and Breyton equal on points for third. It was an impressive show of racing from these boys with only half the field having raced on the track before. These kids ability to adapt to an new track very quickly has been shown in the last couple of weeks.
Sunday dawned with the unfortunatley news that the club champs at Waharoa had been rained out.
Confirmation has just been had of our participation in the youth meeting at Waikaraka Park on March 6. Racing starts at 11 and afterwards we will head through to the Spring for racing that night for the final night at the Springs for the year. The next day sees us return to Rosebank to complete another trifeca of racing for another weekend.
