After a busy period of racing at the Springs during the international midget series that saw Nathan Howard take one win and Ben Lecren, Breyton Davison and Hayden Guptill take a pair of wins each it was time to try again the run the Les Behere Memorial feature at Rangeview Speedway at Wahaora.
The day began with beautiful weather and eight cars ready to take the starters orders. Race one saw Ryan Barry take an early lead with Hayden coming from the back into second. These two cleared out from the field with Breyton coming through for third followed by Andrew Hanson, Morgan McHugh, Nathan, Mitchell Watts and Nicholas Wells.
Race two have a drama fill start with Hayden turning it round in front of the field and Ryan and Morgan collided with his ending up with Ryan and Hayden upside down and Morgan able to continue. Breyton took advantage of this to take the win followed by Andrew, Mitch, Morgan, Nathan and Nicholas. All hands to the pump in the pits with many helpers working hard to get Hayden and Ryan back out.
Due to Hayden and Ryans DNF Breyton took the pole position for the feature which left the race wide open. The kids walked beside there cars and were lined on the fornt straight and introduced to the crowd letting them know the ages of each of the kids. Once the boys were strapped in it was onto the main race. This is a fifteen lap feature so a good chance to see who could keep it together for that many laps.
Andrew and Breyton made a very even start and Breytons inside line saw him take the lead into the first bend. The first yellow of the race was caused by Nathan spinning on the very slick track. Next to turn it around was Andrew who manage to do it right in front of Haydne who with nowhere to go clipped Andrew making Andrew the third driver for the day to get upside down. Andrew was able to restart from the rear of the field. Nathan spun again and around the same time while challening for the lead Hayden spun and headed to the back. WIth the race almost over Breyton had held his line and make any challengers have to try to go around the outside to make a pass (just like some of the old Troy Kete wins in this race). With the spinning all over Breyton took the win with Mitch making a great return to the track with a stay out of trouble second followed by Andrew, Ryan, Nathan, Morgan, Hayden and Nicholas. It was a great race showing that the future of quarter midgets is in great hands with a great bunch of kids.
Next it is back to the Springs on Saturday night then off to Rosebank on the 24th. Please note Rosebank is closed for practices until after the 24th of January due to a new surface being laid. The Whaoroa meeting on the 31st of January is no longer happening.
