• Boxing Day... a big welcome to our 2 Nelson based Quarter Midgets Jay 73c (10yrs) and Jayedan 72c (9yrs) who are here in Auckland until 7th Jan. We also welcome our new Auckland Based Driver Zeon Mc Nabb in 4a (13 yrs). We now have 3 rookies out on the springs track (identified by their yellow ribbon).Boxing day we had 12 kiwikidz cars gridded up, the field looked good and as usual some good fast racing. Race 1 had Nelson based Jayedan and Auckland Kelsi on front row, but Nathan 71 was far to fast and came from the very back to win the race, passing cars he realised quickly to stay low to avoid the wet patchs that were up mid to high track. Breyton in no.67 was right behind him, trying everything to pass Nathan, this was very excting hard racing to watch. Mean while in the mid pack a few of the drivers did get caugt up inthe wet, but it wasn't long before they were bunched up fighting for positions. With a very long wait before their second race the track conditions were bound to be different, much drier and slicker. 71 and 14 had front row followed by 67 and 27 so this was bound to be a good exciting battle, but the green car 14 just took off, leaving the rest of the field to show some really good exciting close racing with positions changing throught out the 6 lap race. As per the first race it was hard to focus as from front to back all had good battles to watch. Both races are added together to give total points and as usual, because we have so many kids so skilled we have many equalling same points, we then have to look at how many cars each have passed from their original grid positions. After accessing grid positions and cars passed, 1st and 2nd had only 1 pt difference and the same with 3rd and 4th. Well done to all the kids as usual the action did not only come from the front but the mid pack always has alot of changes of positions and even our cadets seem to battle with each other.

• 17/12/11 - KAIKOHE & WHANGAREI. The track at Kaikohe was good inbetween the rain, however on race one 9 Morgan and 22 Hayden hit a wet patch causing them to hit the wall quite hard, this took them out for the rest of the day. The other races continued with the results being, 71 Nathan, followed by 27 Hayden and 7 David. The were due to race in Whangarei the next day with other drivers, but was cancelled due to the heavens opening up. Kidz now have 5 events at Springs starting on Boxing day, we also will ahve 2 Christchurch Quarter Drivers coming up 10year old Jay (73c) and Jayedan 9 years (72c).

• 11/12/11 - With a couple of Springs, Rosebanks and Waharoa dates completed all ready the Kiwikidz are well in truly into the season. There has been some very good close races at all the tracks. This coming weekend they head off to Kaikohe followed by Whangarei, then alot of racing at the Springs over the Christmas/new years. Check out our results page for the season so far.

First racing update for 2011/12 season....

With the first Springs practice about to hit us it is timely to cover off the first meeting at Rosebank.  Bright colours seem to be required for sucsess if the opeing meeting of the year is anything to go by. 

Nathan Howard in the newly recouloured orange Glendene Panelbeaters car took the opening win followed by Ben LeCren, Breyton Davison, Kelsi Wats, Jakob LeCren, David Pellow and Nicholas Wells.  Race two saw the bright green Lube King car of Ben LeCren take the win followed by Nathan Howard, Kelsi Watts, Jakeb LeCren, David Pellowand Nicholas Wells with Breyton Davison having some engine problems and pulling out.  Race three saw Ben agan take the win to be followed by Breyton Davison.  In behind them Kesi Watts was having her best race ever managing to hold oput Nathan Howard for a number of laps until he managed to get by her.  Ben took the win followed by Breyton, Nathan, Jakeb, David, and Nicholas with Kesli having a mechanical failure to end the race on the infield.

The feature saw Ben and Nathan off the front row.  Ben shot out to the lead early to take the win followed by Nathan, Breyton, Jakeb, David and Nicholas with Kelsi having a spin on the last lap to not make the finish.  Was a great start to the season with seven cars and still Hayden Guptill and Morgan McHugh apearing at the Springs practices and Hayden Greenhaulgh to reappear after being at the Rosebank practices already.  Also with son new drivers almost ready and practicing away it looks like the Kiwikidz Quarter Midgets are on the rise.

With less that two weeks before the start of the new season and cars being worked hard on over the off season it is time for a brief preview of the coming season. 

Nathan Howard is close to being ready with a new look to the 71 car.  Ben LeCren is joined this season by little bother Jakeb.  Jakeb made a couple of appearences at Waharoa last season and is fizzing ready to go.  Morgan McHughs car has been stripped down and is ready to be put back together.  Hayden Guptills car is in the same state, unfortunately there will be a delayed start to the season with a broken ankle.  Breyton Davison is close to being ready as well.  Hayden Greenhalgh is ready to go after only picking up the ex Matt Leversedge late last season from Christchurch.  Nicholas Wells car is on the back to race ready after his altercation with the walll at Kaikohe.  Kelsi Watts will be returning after missing the later part of last season.  Young David Pellow has been out practicing on the farm in the ex Andrew Hanson car that he run the last two meetings of last season.  Corbin Anderson is ready to join the club and I am sure he is looking forward to his debut.  With Dillon Cooper having purchased the ex Corey Nichols 18 car he will be a welcome edition to the club.  Complleting the feild will be the ex Bittany Orr car which is now based in Whakatane.

With the Western Springs and Rosebank road calendars now complete we are just waiting on the Waharoa Calendar before soting out the final details. 

For those cars that are ready we have three noise testing and practices at Rosebank Rd Speedway on September 10, 17 and 24.  These are a great oppourtunity for all the newer kids to get some laps when there are not many cars on the track.  New drivers please contact Paul LeCren our training officer 09 833 4128 and he will come along and assist in helping you to get started.  Remember that to run at Rosebank you need to have your car Greensheeted, have your licence and also join there club.  Auckland Speedway Riders Club have this year kindly reduced Quarter Midget fees in half so join upand go racing.

With Kaikohe at Easter confirmed for the Kiwikidz it is a good time to book this into your calendars.  With 9 races over three days and staying at the track it is one of the highlights of our season.  Also the open day is hoping to be held again at Waikaraka Park over the Christmas break.  It will be great to see the big smiles from all the kids like we had last season as they get out of the training car after their first ever drive.

Also our training car is available for drives at Rosebank Rd so if you are intersested in getting into Quarter Midgets please call any member of the committee to organise a drive.

With a dodgy forecast, five hardy Quarters headed their way up to Taipa for the traditional end of year race meeting.  With the weather deteriorating the further north we got, nervous times were ahead as to weather we would go racing over the weekend.  First stop was at the track to drop the cars off so as to secure our favorite pit spot.  Then it was off the traditional Friday night dinner at the Manganui Fish Shop.  With all five familes having a feed as the rain lashed about us.

Saturday morning we woke with the rain still here but not to hard.  From the house where three of us were staying we had a fantastic view of the Bay.  We could see the rain was at the track still so we stayed at home a bit longer.  The Howards headed to the track and we soon got the call to say head across the bridge to the track as they were going to try to go racing.  The one thing you can never say about the club at Taipa is that they will give up on racing.  When we arrived the four wheel drives and tractors were out on the track getting the track ready for racing. 

The cars were scrutineered and the grid draw done.  Anticipation was high as the kids were ready to race.  But then a shower passed over the track, some more track prep went on and then the final nail in the coffin for the days racing was a heavy shower that passed over the track.  SO we packed the cars up all ready to come back tomorrow and go racing then. 

Back to the house for dinner.  Once dinner was completed the Howards arrived over and as we settled in to watch last years Rosebank racing the kids played away for hours having a great time.  Finally it was time for bed so we could be at our best for racing tomorrow. 

Sunday dawned and the winterless north could have been true as it was a beautiful day.  The usual drivers briefing was had but with the famous tree in the pits having fallen down the week before in a storm it was a funny look.  Out the kids wend for race one.  Hayden Guptill took and early lead followed by Nathan Howar, Morgan McHugh, Hayden Greenhalgh and David Pellow doing his second ever meeting.  Hayden maintained his lead with Morgan making his way up into second soon to be followed by Hayden Greenhalgh, Nathan and David.  They finished the race in that order. 

Race two saw Morgan take an early lead followed by Hayden Greenhalgh, Nathan, Hayden Guptill and David.  Soon Nathan had prgressed up into second followed by Hayden Guptill who soon after this pulled to the infield.  A lap or so later saw Hayden Greenhalgh make it a pair of Haydens on the infield.  Morgan out in front was able to hold off all Nathans efforts to take the win form Nathan and David getting his first ever podium finish in a race.

As the two Haydens arrived back in the pits Haydens Guptills car was an easy fix.  After some investigations it was found that a couple of seperate issues had caused a engine failure.  A quick discussion was held amongst the club members and when it was revealed that there was a spare engine in Steves trailer a decision was made to change the engine so Hayden could continue to go racing.  This moment reminded me of the engine being pulled out of Jarrod Guptills car at Taipa 6 years ago as the club then also swarmed around to get Jarrod back on the track.  It is great to see half a dozen people around a quarter Midget all doing there part to change the motor.  Once the motor was changed and started it was a quick check to see how many races we had till we were next out.  It was a pleasant surprize to see that we still had ten races to go.  It showed the great spirit within the club and meant that Hayden could get back out there.

Race three saw Hayden Guptill again quickly to the infield with Morgan taking the lead with Nathan, Hayden and David following.  Nathan resumed where he left off in the last race and threw everything at Morgan.  Nathan was getting closer and closer to making a pass around the outside when they caught up to David, who was staying nicely on the pole line, Nathan had the presence of mind to box Morgan in and go on to take the win from Morgan, Hayden and David.  There were smiles all around the club when Hayden Greenhalgh crossed the line making all our efforts to get his out there worth while.

After a plug change Hayden Guptill took an early lead a pulled away as the race progressed.  In behind him Nathan and Morgan resumed there meeting long battle.  They were followed by Hayden Greenhalgh and David.  Hayden Guptill took out the final race off the season followed by Nathan, Morgan, Hayden Greenhalgh and David. 

Ryan Occoner after a great display of Sprintcar driving and wheelstands cam up and talked to the kids and present a pair of race gloves to Morgan who had won the weekend from Nathan and Hayden Guptill.  It was then off to Prizegiving at the track in which all five kids took home a prize.  Again the boys did a great job of speaking at the prizegiving in front of a big crowd.

With a sunny day dawning it was off to Rosebank for last time this season.  It was great to see a new family joining the club with young David Pellow running the ex Andrew Hanson car for the first time.  Also Kyle Davison was running loder brother Breytons car for the day.  An additional bonus was the return of Hayden Greenhalgh after breaking his arm, it was Haydens debut in the ex Matt Leversedge car with great looking signwriting and a change of number to 22.

Firstly Hayden, Kyle and David got an opportuntiy to have a quick run before the meeting to get a taste of Rosebank before they get put into the racing enviroment.

Race one saw Hayden Guptill get a quick start off the front row followed by Hayden Greenhalgh.  Hayden Greenhalgh soon had to pull off with tearoff issues.  Ben LeCren worked his way up into second followed by Morgan McHugh, Nathan Howard, Kyle Davison and David Pellow.  The cars stayed this way to the chequered flag.

Race 2 saw Ben take off from the front row into the lead.  Hayden Guptill managed to sneak up into second followed by Nathan, Morgan, Hayden Greenhalgh, Kyle and David.  As third to seventh settled into an order the battle was up front with Hayden Guptill trying everything to get round Ben.  Ben was not going to give up possesion of the pole line.  Ben held on to take the win from Hayden Guptill, Nathan, Morgan, Hayden Greenhalgh, Kyle and David.  

Race three saw Hayden Guptill and Ben tied on points for first and Nathan and Morgan tied on points for third, so with feature start positions up for grabs everything was set up for a great race.  As the green flag dropped and the boys zipped into turn one, all of a sudden the boys were three wide, from my position in the tower it looked like it was either going to end really good or really bad.  Luck for the boys Hayden Guptill managed to come from grid four and pop out in front as they came out of turn one.  Nathan pulled in behind him.  Morgan had a spin and dropped to the back but managed to keep the car going.  The race finished with Hayden winning with Nathan in second followed by Ben, Hayden Greenhalgh, Kyle, Morgan and David.

The feature saw Ben take of at the start with Hayden settling in behind with Nathan, Morgan, Hayden, Kyle and David in behind.  This looked like it was going to be a repeat of race two with Hayden trying everything to get around Ben.  The positions looked settled until with a couple of laps to go Ben and Hayden came up on David and Ben drifted slightly high to allow Hayden to sneak on through to the lead.  Hayden Guptill kept the lead for the last couple of laps followed home by Ben, Nathan, Morgan, Hayden Greenhalgh, Kyle and David.

It was a great way to finish the season at Rosebank with two new driver having their debut and doing a great job.  Some close racing and a great feeling in the club looking forward.  Next up is a trip down to Waharoas prizegiving this Saturday night followed by some hardy kids heading up to Taipa to finish the season.

April started with a trip to Huntly as part of the mininstock day.  The Waikato Quarter Midget champs were won by Hayden Guptill with Nathan Howard one point behind in second and Morgan McHugh in third.

Then it was off to Waharoa where Breyton Davison dominated the day with a win in club champs followed by Hayden Guptill and Nathan Howard, The ANZAC feature was held later in the day with Breyton again taking the win followed by Hayden and Morgan McHugh who with a last corner dive managed to get ahead of Nathan to take third.

It was then off to Kaikohe at Easter.  A drivey track greeted the boys with Breyton Davison taking out the Kaihohe Car Club Stampede on Friday with Hayden Guptill second and Nathan Howard third.Look at this link for the Friday racing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2YN3zgVgqc

Saturday saw Nicholas Wells get a laps start in the opening race and take the win to be followed home by Hayden, Breyton, Nathan and Morgan.  Race two saw Hayden take the win from the back followed by Morgan, Nathan Breyton and Nicholas.  Race three was delclared after a couple of laps after Nicholas tagged the wall.  Breyton took this race out followed by Nicholas, Nathan, Hayden and Morgan.  It was then back to the tents to relax and ready to race on Sunday.
